Join the Team! Be a Volunteer
It's always a little nerve racking to agree to a responsibility without knowing the details of the role. Hopefully the following roles and responsibilities will alleviate some of those gitters.
Head Basketball Coach
As a Head Coach you will be given a "yours to keep" Coach's Manual. This will be your source for just about any question you might have about how to be a Head Coach in a kids basketball league. The Coach's Manual provides information on how to run a practice, questions about Game Day, and much, much more. Also, new for this year is the Upward Sports Coach's App available for iPhone, iPod, iPad, and the Andriod market.
Responsibilities:
Provide a safe, fun, learning environment for participants to learn the game of basketball.
Organize and lead a one hour practice each week of the season.
Follow Coach's Manual on equal playing time for each child.
Communicate with parents in a positive, honest, and supportive manner.
Lead/facilatate a short Devotional time during each practice
Distribute Upward Stars after each game.
You must attend a
mandatory
coaches meeting on Monday, December 10 at 7:00pm or Saturday, December 15 at 9:00am.
Assistant Basketball Coach
Responsibilities:
Be present at weekly practice and game.
Help Head Coach run drills, keep focus of participants, and assist whenever necessary.
Recognize the “winner” in every child.
Lead by example.
Head Cheerleading Coach
As a Head Cheerleading Coach you will be given a "yours to keep" Coach's Manual. This will be your source for just about any question you might have about how to be a Head Cheerleading Coach. The Coach's Manual provides information on how to teach cheers, run a cheer practice, questions about Game Day, and much, much more. Also, new for this year, the Head Cheerleading Director for Upward Sports, Dipali Britton (former Head Cheerleading coach for Clemson University), is available directly to assist our local program with innovative ideas, cheers, and more. Wait there's more! Also, new for this year is the Upward Sports Cheer Coach App available for iPhone, iPod, iPad, and the Andriod market.
Responsibilities:
Share the love of Jesus with each participant.
Provide a safe, fun, learning environment for participants to learn the basics of cheerleading.

Lead by example.

Display sportsmanship and embrace the unique format of Upward Cheerleading
Communicate with parents in a positive, honest, and supportive manner.
Lead/facilatate a short Devotional time during each practice
Distribute Upward Cheerleading Stars.
You must attend a
mandatory
coaches meeting on Monday, December 10 at 7:00pm or Saturday, December 15 at 9:00am.
Team Manager
Responsibilities:
Coordinate with team member families postpractice snack or after game treat.
Assist Head Coach in communicating information to the team.
Communicate to Head Coach players that may be sick, on vacation, or absent.
Food Stand Volunteer
This role is perfect for the person who isn't really into sports, but willing to give back to the Upward Sports Basketball and Cheerleading Program. It's also a great way to meet other Upward Sports parents and families. All money raised at the Food Stand goes directly back into the Upward Sports program.
Responsibilities:
Willing to serve a total of 6 hours during the Upward Sports Basketball and Cheerleading season.
Arrive at designated time.
If not available during designated time please find a replacement and notify Food Stand Manager.
Referee
The game of basketball or any organized game cannot function properly without a referee. Upward Basketball believes the referee plays a vital role in teaching and equipping young players in the rules of the game. Upward Basketball referees are to be treated with dignity and respect by coaches, players, and fans alike. We are unwavering in this stance!
Responsibilities:
Understand and know the sport.
Lead by example.
Provide positive comments to players during the game for their play, effort and sportsmanship.
Control the game. Upward Basketball referees represent the highest level of authority on the court.
Communicate effectively with coaches, players and spectators.
Attend a
mandatory
referee training session on Monday, December 10 at 7:00pm or Saturday, December 15 at 9:00am.
